Understanding CAA Drone Regulations in South Africa

December 15, 2024 7 min read Riaan Huysamen

If you're flying drones commercially in South Africa, you need to know the legal framework set by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA).

Critical Legal Distinction

Commercial vs Hobby: If you're being paid, you're commercial. Period. You must be licensed.

What is a ROC?

A Remote Operator Certificate (ROC) is issued to companies conducting legal drone operations. This is your company's license to operate commercially.

What is a UASOC?

The Unmanned Aircraft System Operating Certificate enables operations under a specific ROC. It lists approved aircraft and pilots.

Essential Legal Requirements

Pilot Licensing: You must hold a valid RPL (Remote Pilot License) and medical certification.
Insurance & Safety: Proper insurance and airspace awareness are legal requirements — not optional.

The Legal Framework Breakdown

RPL

Personal pilot license

ROC

Company operations certificate

UASOC

Specific operations approval

"Flying without these puts clients and operators at legal risk. Always go legal. Always go certified."

Why This Matters

Operating without proper certification isn't just illegal — it puts everyone at risk. Insurance won't cover incidents, clients face liability, and operators risk criminal charges. At Drone Pilot Cape Town, we maintain full legal compliance with active ROC and UASOC certifications.
