Shooting Vessels at Sea — Maritime Drone Filming Tips

December 15, 2024 6 min read Riaan Huysamen

Filming ships, boats, and maritime assets from the air takes next-level drone skill. Here's how to master it:

Wind Anticipation

Coastal flights are gusty — know your drone's limits.

Cape Town's coastal winds can change rapidly. I always check wind forecasts and have escape routes planned. Never fly in winds exceeding your drone's specifications.

Track on the Move

Match the vessel's speed and direction to get dynamic trailing or side shots.

Successful vessel tracking requires predicting movement patterns and maintaining smooth camera work while the drone follows complex paths.

Low Altitude Passes

Dramatic visuals often happen just meters above the water — fly confidently, not recklessly.

Safety First: Low altitude maritime flying requires exceptional skill. Always maintain visual line of sight, have a spotter, and know your emergency procedures. The dramatic shots aren't worth risking equipment or safety.

Color Temperature Mastery

Water and sky need white balance tweaking for cinematic tone.

Maritime environments create unique lighting challenges. The reflection off water can fool auto white balance. I often shoot in manual mode with custom white balance settings for consistent, professional results.

Professional Maritime Techniques

Approach Angles: Side approaches show vessel scale, bow shots create drama, stern shots capture wake patterns.
Communication: Coordinate with vessel crews via radio for safety and optimal shot timing.
Depth Creation: Use foreground elements like waves or other vessels to add visual depth.

"Maritime drone work requires legal clearances, fast reflexes, and sharp composition instincts. It's not for rookies."

Legal Considerations

Maritime operations often involve restricted airspace, port authorities, and international waters. Always verify permissions and maintain proper documentation. Our CAA certification covers maritime operations within South African waters.
